Camogie

Camogie History

Camogie is a field sport very similar to hurling. The difference is in a slight variation of the rules and it being played only by women and girls. The Milwaukee Hurling Club has offered camogie since 2000. Since then it has grown in both number and spirit. We encourage anyone interested to participate in our weekly practices where skills and camaraderie are enhanced. At Irish Fest each year, the camogie club fields two full teams to showcase the sport.

The Clash, the MHC’s competitive camogie team, competes against other camogie clubs throughout the country. In 2003, the team was invited to participate in the North American Gaelic Athletic Association Championships, which were held in Boston. The Clash are the owners of 3 national championships – junior camogie champions in Boston in 2003, junior A camogie champions in Denver in 2004 and junior camogie champions in Philadelphia in 2006!

The MHC encourages any young women interested to participate in this century-old tradition. Please email milwaukeehurling@yahoo.com for more information.

Camogie Rules

The Basics

The rules of camogie are similar to hurling, with the following differences:

A player may play the sliothar to their hand a total of three times as opposed to two in hurling.
Players may handpass into the goal or over the bar to score.
If a band is present on the bas of the hurley, it needs to be taped.
The pitch is smaller than a standard hurling pitch.
Camogie teams field thirteen players aside versus fifteen for hurling.
The sliothar is slightly smaller (size 4 versus size 5).
The goals are also slightly smaller.
