Archive for November 2010
The Milwaukee Hurling Club would like to express our deepest sympathies on the recent passing of Chuck Ward, who had an undeniably large impact on the Milwaukee community. Chuck was also an enthusiastic supporter of the MHC, to which we are forever grateful.
Charles “Chuck” Ward, the president of Milwaukee Irish Fest, three time president of the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin, and Shamrock Club 2009 Irishman of the Year, died Friday, November 5, 2010 at home of cancer. He was 54 years old.
Chuck was the entertainment director for the festival, and was the leader of the band, Blarney, which celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2010. He was also a past president of the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin, and was the Shamrock Club’s 2009 Irishman of the year.

Get in on the Act for the Kids of the MHC!
Thursday, November 11th ComedySportz Event to Raise Funds for Youth Team Trip to Ireland
You are invited to come out and enjoy a family-friendly night of fun and hilarity. As ComedySportz’ website explains, “Unlike most other forms of performance comedy, ComedySportz is great for all ages. The audience of a typical ComedySportz match contains everyone from kids to college students to parents to grandparents. Everyone has a good time and no one gets offended, and if an actlete [performer] steps beyond the boundaries of good taste, the ‘brown bag foul’ (a brown paper sack placed over the offending player’s head) will be called to set things straight.”
This upcoming fundraiser for the MHC’s Youth Team’s trip to Ireland will take place on Thursday, November 11 at the Comedy Sportz “arena” at 420 South 1st Street in Milwaukee. Show begins at 7:30 PM, and doors open at 7:00 PM for general seating. Tickets are $12.00 per person, and can be purchased online from the MHC website www.hurling.net or from a participating youth family.
Kit Slawski will also be at The Village Pub in Shorewood Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, November 2nd and 3rd from 7:30 – 9:00 PM selling tickets.
Before or after the show, dine & drink at Slim McGinn’s next door at 338 South 1st Street. Slim’s will donate 10% of your drink tab (including soda!) that evening from 5:00 -10:00 PM with flyer available below. Tickets will also be available this evening for a special raffle. There will also be a $2.00 raffle tickets for a 50/50 drawing available at Slim’s that evening.
Other specials that Slim’s has on Thursdays include:
Free Peanuts
$2 1/2 pound burgers with homemade fries or chips
Jumbo tap domestic beers at regular size prices ($3)
$2.50 bottled “beer of the month”
$1 PBR’s
Proceeds from this benefit will help fund travel expenses for the Milwaukee Hurling Club’s Youth Team on their upcoming trip to Ireland in April 2011. Accompanied by parents and coaches, the MHC youth will represent Milwaukee as they scrimmage with local youngsters throughout the province of Munster, including a club in Nenagh, Tipperary and County Cork. The trip will include Thurles, Co. Tipperary, which is the birthplace of the Gaelic Athletic Association and some sightseeing. Youngsters will learn about the history of hurling, the Irish culture, and the significance that hurling holds with the Irish people while taking part in hurling related activities throughout the trip.

Most fundraiser announcements start out with “Mark Your Calendars” … but in this case, MHC Camogie wants to tell you to hold off and buy their 2011 calendar! (You can mark all the important MHC events once you get it!)
MHC Camogie has so much to be excited about and proud of. In its 10th year, the participation amongst the women and girls of the club was close to peak, with many enjoying the camaraderie and skill building it gave. To further promote this great aspect of our club, the women are putting a calendar together, featuring the women recreating iconic images (i.e. Rosie the Riveter, Audrey Hepburn). Of course this wouldn’t be an MHC undertaking if it didn’t reflect what we all love. … hurling.
Expect the calendars to be ready for purchase at the MHC holiday party, which will be scheduled at the beginning of December.
A special thanks to Andy McKee, our resident photographer and sponsor, for his art direction of this big undertaking.
